France gives you sharp vertical and refuge dinners. Nepal gives you weeks above 4,000 m. Toggle a route to see how the numbers actually compare.

§ 03 · Life on the Trail

Two utterly different ways to sleep above 2,000 m.

The lodging system shapes the entire experience — what you eat, how you charge a phone, whether you sleep in your own room or next to twelve strangers. Know what you are signing up for.

France · Refuge

/01

"Soupe, plat, dessert. Lights out by ten."

Stone-built mountain refuges, often run by alpine clubs (CAF, SAC). You arrive, take off your boots, eat soup, drink wine, share a dorm. Quiet hours start at 22:00.

  • Dorm bunks 6–18·
  • Multi-course dinner + wine·
  • Mains electricity·
  • Booking essential Jul/Aug·

Nepal · Tea House

/02

"Dal Bhat power · 24 hour."

Family-run lodges along the major routes. A common room heated by a yak-dung stove is the social center. Above 4,000 m, comfort drops sharply — but the hospitality does not.

  • Twin-share rooms (plywood)·
  • Dal Bhat / garlic soup / momos·
  • Solar charging · per device fee·
  • Hot bucket shower · 5 USD·

§ 04 · Booking Notice

Book buffer days. The Lukla flight does not care about your itinerary.

Mountain flights — Kathmandu–Lukla in particular — are delayed or cancelled in any weather that isn't perfectly clear. Add 2 to 3 buffer days at the end of every Himalayan trip. Our booking flow will remind you again at checkout.
